I finished a review of Stealing MySpace a few weeks back. I found the lesson missed on MySpace was that you can't compete with everybody (e.g. their attempt to create a home-grown YouTube) that arguably let FaceBook over-take them last year. Not a page-turner, but almost an important book.

Thanks for the great post. Just want to mention though that I have been on MySpace for 3.5 years daily... and have never seen porn. What I see on prime television is 10 times worse than anything I ever seen on MySpace... and that is the absolute truth. MySpace is community of great people... really... nicest online experience I have ever had... and I deal with hundreds of folks everyday on there at:

http://www.myspace.com/nonprofitorganizations
http://www.myspace.com/smallbusinesses
http://www.myspace.com/collegesanduniversities

I love that Myspace is a completely open, uncensored community where the users have a lot of power... a great reflection of the world in which we live. Too many folks who don't use MySpace get caught up in how it looks (not neat, clean and linear like Facebook) and miss the bigger picture. Not even likes clean, neat and linear. :) I have built an entire business using MySpace... and to this day no other website matches the ROI (Return on Investment).

I often wondered about those co-founders and owner of the sites, how they managed to go around doing their business and partners. Good find!

Peg,

I enjoyed this article. I have witnessed many of the happenings you have discussed, but remain a pragmatist about social networking.

My participation is one of making my life easier. It certainly takes less effort to write something well once and then send links to SCORE clients and make it available to others on the web at the same time.

Best wishes and keep it up!

Ken
