Mike,

For a social network to success, you need passionate fans, a reason for them to come back to the site regularly, and something to keep them on the site for long periods. I just don't see people in towns with the same names having a reason to come to the site more than once or twice. If you are not trying to make this a real business, you could set up an inexpensive social network on Ning, for example, and add that feature to your existing sites. However I do not think you have the potential for repeated use and fast growth that is required for a social network to have real business potential. Why not build a Ning-type site and promote it to see if you can build a passionate following? If you outgrow those features, expand using more full-featured software? Do read about Ning before you do this, however. http://howtostartasocialnetwork.com/best-social-network-software/

I had a web site up for a year or so and it came from a research project I have been working since 1996. I has to do with small towns, home towns that people may have in common.
There are 28,000 towns around the US whose name and location are in at least 5 states.
My town has 20, etc.
I have had 3 web sites and got some response, but my idea was to turn it into a social network where people from the same towns or people whose home town is on the list can share stories, pictures, history, etc.
I have spent a lot of money doing this, written 6 books have over 6,000 pictures and the books are too expensive to publish.

Does this idea have any real merit. I hope this is not a lead in for a sales call please.

Great post! I am just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well - resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our company is based in the US, it?s all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is useful in that case.
